Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water 360 g
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar 15 g
  • 2 tsp yeast 7 g
  • 3 cups bread flour 360 g
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt 9 g
  • 2 tbsp olive oil 25 g

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes or until the mixture is bubbly.
  • Add the bread flour, salt, and olive oil to the mixing bowl. Stir the mixture until a dough forms.
  • Cover the bowl and let the dough rise for 2 hours in a warm place. Preheat the oven to 450º F with a Dutch oven inside.
  • Place the dough on a generously floured surface. Dust the surface of the dough with more flour. Shape the dough into a round and place it on a piece of parchment paper.
  • Move the dough to the hot Dutch oven carefully. Place the lid on top and bake the bread for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and bake for 15 more minutes, or until the top of the loaf is golden brown.
  • Remove the loaf from the oven and let it cool. Serve the bread warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • If the dough is too wet, add a tablespoon of flour at a time until the dough is manageable. However, the dough is meant to be wet to create a crispy texture when baked.
  • A Dutch oven gives the best results, but this bread can be made without it. As an alternate option, bake the bread on a baking sheet. Place a pan of boiling water below the bread to create steam that helps the bread rise and develop a crust.
